The Suns have scored more than 100 points in each of their last seven games, and the Sixers have had more trouble scoring points of late, failing to do so in their last four contests. The Sixers have cooled down too; after winning seven straight games for interim coach Tony DiLeo, they have gone 5-4 in their last nine. Elton Brand is out for the year with a shoulder injury, which is a tremendous blow, and that also hurts Philadelphia here against a Phoenix team that has a 1-2 punch on the inside with Amare Stoudamire and Shaquille O'Neal.

That's right - we said Shaquille O'Neal. The center, who was recently named a reserve for the All-Star Game that will take place in Phoenix, had 20 points and ten rebounds in Sunday's game against the Detroit Pistons. He has usually been rested in the back end of back-to-back games by Coach Terry Porter, but in this case it is probable that Shaq will play. That has, interestingly enough, fueled some rumors that Shaq is being showcased for a possible trade before the deadline.

It should be mentioned that without having Brand available, the Sixers have posted a 12-8 record, which is better than their 13-16 mark with him. Does that mean they are a better team without Brand? That's the spin they're trying to put on it, as they pump up their chances to make some noise in the playoffs, if they eventually make it there. Indeed, DiLeo, a Sixer executive who replaced Maurice Cheeks in what was one in a rash of firing in the NBA this season, appears to have made a difference, going 16-10 under his direction.

The Sixers are more of an ensemble piece, and probably a better defensive club. They'd like to slow the pace, as they have allowed less than 93 points per game at home. With a day of rest, we're going to afford them a slight edge over Phoenix in this one, as Shaq will likely not be as effective. We'll take the Sixers minus the points in the BetUS NBA odds.

Warriors vs Spurs

This is a game about different styles of tempo, with the run-and-gun Warriors against the defensive-minded Spurs. Oddsmakers have been overvaluing the Golden State offense of late, on a 6-1 run under the total. San Antonio is on a 5-3 under run with the No. 6 defense in the NBA, allowing 94 ppg. These teams met once this season back on December 6, and who controlled the tempo? San Antonio allowed 88 points in a game that sailed under the total. Play the Spurs/Warriors under the total.

Your basketball update from CopperTheDog

With José Calderón back in the lineup, the Toronto Raptors are hoping the second half of the season is a lot better than the first.

Calderón had 17 points and 11 assists and the visiting Raptors escaped with a 107-106 victory over the Nets on Wednesday night after Nets point guard Devin Harris missed an open 16-foot jumper at the buzzer.

“We’ve got to be more aggressive and try to make plays for one another,” said Calderón, whose return from a hamstring injury has sparked the Raptors’ first three-game winning streak since the start of the season. “We need more games like tonight, where we make a good defensive play at the end.”

Harris got what he wanted on the final shot, a step-back jumper from the right edge of the foul line that hit off the rim. “That’s my go-to move,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Anthony Parker added 21 points, and Chris Bosh had 18 for the Raptors, who shot almost 56 percent and had six players in double figures.

Vince Carter had 27 points to lead the Nets, who rallied in the final minutes by hitting 4 of their 15 3-pointers. Harris added 25 points and 10 assists, but he missed the biggest shot of the night after Calderón had left the door open by missing a jumper with about 21 seconds to play.

CELTICS 119, KINGS 100 Eddie House scored 28 points on a career-high eight 3-pointers, and Rajon Rondo had 24 points and 9 assists to lead host Boston to its ninth win in row.

HORNETS 94, NUGGETS 81 Peja Stojakovic matched a season high with 26 points, and host New Orleans used stifling defense to beat Denver, which got 22 points from Kenyon Martin.

PISTONS 98, TIMBERWOLVES 89 Rasheed Wallace tied a season high with 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead visiting Detroit, which snapped Minnesota’s three-game winning streak.

76ERS 95, ROCKETS 93 Andre Iguodala hit a baseline jumper with 36 seconds left and finished with 20 points to help visiting Philadelphia overcome a late 14-point deficit.

HEAT 93, WIZARDS 71 Dwyane Wade had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists before sitting out the entire fourth quarter, and Miami pulled away in the second half at home. PACERS 107, BUCKS 99 T. J. Ford matched his career high with 34 points, and Indiana, playing without its leading scorer, Danny Granger, who sat out with a sore knee, held off visiting Milwaukee.

IN OTHER GAMES Kevin Durant scored 35 points, Jeff Green added 23 on a career-high five 3-pointers and host Oklahoma City recovered after blowing a late 10-point lead to beat Memphis, 114-102 in overtime. ... Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard keyed a game-changing run during the second quarter, and Jason Terry scored 22 points to lead host Dallas past Golden State, 117-93.

WALLACE HAS COLLAPSED LUNG Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace sustained a partially collapsed left lung and a fractured rib on a flagrant foul by Andrew Bynum late in the team’s double-overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, team officials said.
